Drought Season Incoming

Important Notice: Approaching Drought Season in South Texas

As South Texas approaches Drought Season, it’s essential to be mindful of our water usage. Here are some effective ways to save water and reduce your water costs:

Easy Water-Saving Tips:

  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Run the washing machine and dishwasher only when you have a full load.
  • Fill a sink with water to rinse dishes instead of running water continuously.
  • Take shorter showers. A 10-minute shower can use anywhere from 25 to 70 gallons of water.
  • Use low flow shower heads and faucet aerators. Find low flow shower heads here and faucet aerators here.
  • Fix leaks. Leaky faucets can add up! Use a drip calculator to find out how much water you're wasting.
  • Install a dual flush or low flow toilet or put a conversion kit on your existing toilet. Find conversion kits here.
  • Water your lawn late in the evenings or early in the mornings to minimize evaporation.
  • Plan a xeriscape garden using drought-tolerant plants native to South Texas. Learn more at TAMU.
  • Catch runoff from your roof and store it in rain barrels. For more information, check out Rainwater Harvesting.
  • Monitor your daily water usage by signing up for My Water Advisor. This free service can help you save money!
  • Share your knowledge about water conservation and efficiency with your neighbors.
